It’s really hard to make a living off of your craft. I think we all know this on one level or another. The discussion we’ve been having over on my stories has been really interesting. It’s clear that many knitwear designers can’t afford photoshoots and models and rely heavily on themselves, their friends and their testers to showcase their work. I myself had never done a professional photoshoot until I met the team at @themakingthingsapp. I don’t have the financial capability to do too much when it comes to my business, and I feel SO lucky and SO privileged to get to work with a company that puts their designers and makers first! -
SO HERE COMES MY MUCH BELATED APPRECIATION POST: -
I feel kinda crazy that I hadn’t shared these gorgeous photos with y’all yet! The MT team took care of everything for this shoot with no cost to me. They’ve been working hard to let me be able to share my vision in several videos and my opinion regarding size inclusivity on their blog. I feel so indebted to them and all they are doing in this community. Y’all know I love Ravelry so much, and I think people are quick to defend Rav when MT is brought up! I however don’t feel they are in competition with one another. I love them both equally and am excited to see how the two platforms grow and change over time. -
When you’re a member of @themakingthingsapp, you get unlimited access to a big library of curated patterns from people like me, @tina.say.knits, @xtinawithwolves, @arohaknits and countless others! Do you already buy single patterns from these designers? That’s awesome and it’s one way to support them! Being a member of MT and interacting with their patterns is another way to show your financial support for your favorite designers.
The more time you spend interacting with a pattern, the more money that designer makes that month from your interest in their work! If you’re making several patterns a month, it’s definitely a platform to look into and explore. It’s also another way of saying you care and support the artistry of your favorite #knitweardesigner babes! This helps us achieve our goals of bringing you better photoshoots, more patterns and (Cont’d in comments)

I’ve never made anything like the #Sarahcrop! She is fierce, she is strong and she needs some ends woven in that I 100% photoshopped out of this pic 🙃 as always, Sarah will be available in a full size range from XS-5X and features the stunning work of #indiedyer extraordinaire @travelingyarn! You will be able to see and purchase this design IN PERSON at #vogueknittinglive in NYC this month. After that it will be available on @hi.ravelry and @themakingthingsapp! #travelingyarn #vklnyc2019

I am still reading through DMs today and promise I will respond to everyone!! I just wanted to pop on here and say something that won’t disappear in 24 hours. ✨
The last couple of days have been super painful for so many people in our community. I’m disappointed with the lack of white people coming forward to say something. And, unsurprisingly, the POC of this community have been doing the WORK. There have also been some other positive things that came out of the last 48 hours, like all of us coming together to take down that heinous hat pattern! ✨
What I am taking away from this, is that this community is much stronger when it engages with and confronts its own issues head on rather then pretending they don’t exist. This is not a conversation that can fade away next week. We have to keep talking about this. The systemic racism that exists in this country impacts every industry, especially this one! As a white, Jewish, bisexual woman—I have an immense amount of privilege and I often don’t know when it is my place to speak up or take a backseat when it comes to issues of race. Reading Karen’s blog and Instagram post and reading all of the comments from white women encouraging, praising, and defending her incredibly problematic and xenophobic words, I was filled with intense anguish and embarrassment. I felt, as a white designer with a certain amount of followers and influence, I could say something and make a little bit of an impact with the other white folk that engage with my profile—but most importantly, I could help champion the people of color who had come forward to share their pain and frustration. I could share their words with as many people as possible and help make sure they are heard. ✨
I need to do better. The white people of this community need to do better. Silence is complacency, plain and simple. Jews do not have a history of being silent. I was taught to always stand up and say something, no matter what will come from it. Deep down I believe we all know what is right and what is wrong. Something very wrong happened this week, and apologies need to be made. (Cont’d in comments)
